All too often, the culprit is simple: the customer is running the compressor off a standard extension cord instead of wall power, whether that's a few feet away or clear across the shop.
What Voltage Drop Actually Is
Voltage drop happens when electrical current travels through a length of wire and loses some of its voltage to resistance along the way. Every cord has some resistance, and the longer or thinner the cord, the more voltage gets lost before it reaches the compressor. A coiled cord makes this worse: coiling traps heat that would otherwise dissipate into the air, and that heat further increases resistance.
The result: the compressor motor receives less voltage than it requires, so it draws more current to compensate. That extra current means a hotter-running cord, a hotter-running compressor, and a motor working harder than it should have to just to keep up.
Coiled Cord Costs You Amps
When possible, only use extension cords that match the distance from wall power to compressor. If a longer cord is unavoidable, fully unwind it and lay it out in neat, non-overlapping rows. This lets heat escape and avoids the abnormal current draw that comes with a coiled cord.
Cord Quality Counts Too
Compressors draw significant power, and a typical hardware store extension cord often isn't built to supply it. If a longer run is necessary, upgrade to a heavier-gauge cord rated for the load, or better yet, position the compressor so its supplied power cable can plug directly into wall power and skip the extension cord altogether.
