Getting Ready for Your New Compressor


So, you’re about to buy a new Nardi electric-powered compressor. Congratulations! That’s a great choice, and also a great moment to think about the power outlet it’s going to plug into.


Power supply testing may sound like a waste of time. It isn’t. Every Nardi unit is engineered to run on specific electrical conditions, meaning voltage, phase, amperage, and frequency (Hz). If the available power source doesn’t match what the unit needs, the equipment can be damaged before it ever gets a fair shot at the job. And because that kind of damage is a power problem, not a manufacturing one, it falls outside the warranty.


We’ve seen it happen more than once: Someone buys great equipment, gets it delivered, unpackage and set-up only to find out the available power can’t deliver what the compressor needs. The unit won’t run right, or worse, it gets damaged by low-quality power. This is a preventable problem.


Making Sure Your Power and Equipment are a Good Match


  1. Know your compressor’s electrical specs. Find the voltage, phase configuration (single-phase or three-phase), amperage, and Hertz the unit requires. It’s on the nameplate and in the manual.

  2. Check the power at the installation location. The rating printed on your electrical panel isn’t the whole story. Undersized wiring, long cable runs, shared circuits, and a weak or unstable grid can all leave the outlet delivering less than what is expected.

  3. Make sure the two match. Confirm your installation location can reliably deliver what the compressor needs in all conditions: at start-up, under load, etc.

  4. When in doubt, call an electrician. A qualified electrician can confirm everything above in far less time than it takes to troubleshoot a damaged compressor.

  5. Ask about electrical noise, too. A stable supply matters as much as a correctly rated one. Spikes, harmonics, and interference from other equipment on the same circuit can damage a compressor even when the voltage and amperage look perfectly normal on paper.*


Checking power quality before delivery protects the equipment and saves a lot of frustration later. Insufficient power is a preventable problem, so before installation day, take the time to verify the power source.


* Electrical noise refers to voltage transients, harmonic distortion, and frequency instability on the supply line, distinct from steady-state voltage and amperage. A standard multimeter only reads RMS voltage and current at a point in time; it will not reveal spikes, waveform distortion, or short-duration events. Diagnosing line noise requires a power quality analyzer or an oscilloscope capable of capturing the waveform over time. This evaluation should be performed by a qualified electrician or power quality technician, particularly when the noise originates upstream of the site’s panel.
